Certificate of Ministry
 
Purpose
The Certificate in Ministry program is designed to equip Christians for service in a variety of ministries. In addition to courses in the Bible, students will learn important concepts and skills in a wide range of courses, including preaching, leadership, counseling, spiritual disciplines, etc. Graduates of Maranatha College’s Certificate of Ministry program will be broadly trained to serve effectively in a ministry. The Certificate of Ministry is an important step for those pursuing a Bachelor of Ministry at Maranatha College.
 
Who Studies a Certificate of Ministry?

Students who…
    • Seek to become broadly trained for ministry
    • Plan on earning a Bachelor’s degree in ministry
    • Possess a basic knowledge of the Church of God 7th Day and want to grow in faith
    • Desire to improve the skills needed to communicate the Gospel in the 21st century
    • Are motivated to commit the necessary time for studying and reflecting on their ministry experiences
    • Seek certified recognition of their readiness for ministry

Entrance Requirements

The Certificate of Ministry is available to all born-again Christians who demonstrate a sincere desire to serve the Lord regardless of age, gender, or church affiliation. Students should also demonstrate completion of high school or achieved high school equivalency.

Program Requirements

Students have two years to complete all of the 12 required courses in the 40 credit hour program and must possess a GPA of at least 2.75 to earn the Certificate of Ministry.

A serious study of the science of biblical interpretation including a survey of the history of interpretation and an introduction to the theory, methods, and practice of biblical exegesis.
 
BCT 203 Introduction to Biblical Counseling 3 Jim DeFrancisco, Ph.D., D.Min.
An overview and introduction to Biblical Counseling. The class will present basic counseling principles and skills using the Holy Scripture as the core text. Emphasis is placed on a counseling process that is healing and confrontational (to sin) through an integrated system of Scriptural truths and behavior science principles.
 
DIS 102 Spiritual Disciplines 2 Pastor Alex Ciurana, M.T.S.
A survey of Christian spirituality. Spiritual disciplines such as the prayer of Jesus, silence and solitude, continual prayer (1 Thess. 5:17), and meditation will be examined in methodology and overall relation to devotional theology. The general disciplines of Bible study, fasting, service, and worship will also be discussed. Enrich your own walk with Christ through the study and application of varied Christian spirituality.
 
DOC 102 Biblical Doctrines 2 Self Study
An introductory course on the important and unique doctrines of the Church of God 7th Day. Some of the 32 doctrinal studies will include: the existence of God, the existence of humankind, the doctrine of sin, the doctrine of Christ, and the blessings of the Sabbath.
 
EDU 203 Foundations to Christian Education 3 John R. Kennedy, M.A., M.Ed.
A study of the theory and practice of the church’s educational ministry. Explores the nature of Christian education by investigating its biblical and historical foundations. Emphasis is given to the development of skills that encompass teacher-level factors and the ability to improve student-level factors.
 
GRK 104 Elementary Greek I 4 Pastor Shawn Ragan, B.A.
A study that will acquaint students with the basic reading of Koine/Hellenistic Greek, including the alphabet grammar, and lexical information. The emphasis of the class is on reading ancient Greek, particularly Koine (common) Greek spoken during the time of Christ.
 
HOM 104 Introduction to Preaching 4 Pastor Andy Hassen, B.Div.
An introduction to the exercise in preaching. Attention is given to the selection and interpretation of the text and the formulation of the sermon idea. An overview will be made of the elements of a good sermon and the techniques of effective sermon delivery. It is hoped that through this course the student will come to appreciate the joy of preaching and the satisfaction of good preparation.
 
LEA 205 Foundations to Christian Leadership 5 Bill Braswell, D.Min.
A cohesive introduction to the principles of Christian leadership. Drawing on the disciplines of the Applied Behavior Sciences, Education, Apologetics, and the practicality of personal effectiveness training, this competency based course equips the participant with leadership skills applicable to the work, place, home, church, and community.
 
NTE 103 New Testament Survey 3 John R. Kennedy, M.A., M.Ed.
A survey of the New Testament in terms of historical evidence and faith. Emphasis is placed on a study of the books of the New Testament, including authorship, date, historical setting, message, literary structure, and interpretation.
 
NTE 104 Pauline Epistles 4 Pastor Monico Muffley, B.Div.
An examination of the Pauline epistles encompassing two ultimate purposes: (1) for one to know Christ and center his/her faith solely on Him – as Paul came to understand and practice – and (2) for one to come to understand the divine purpose in his/her own life. Insight in those areas will be given through the accomplishment of the practical purpose of this course, that is, to become more acquainted with the teachings of Paul through his epistles, especially focusing on his discourse of the matter of law and grace.
 
NTE 114 Gospel of John 4 Jim DeFrancisco, Ph.D.
An exposition of the Gospel of John, examining the authorship, date, setting, argument, and theology of the book. Special attention is given to Aramaic, the primary language of Jesus, as well. The class includes audio lectures.
 
OTE 103 Old Testament Survey 3 Tom Roberts, Ph.D.
A cohesive study of the purpose and message of the Old Testament. Focus is on the backgrounds, prominent subjects, key words, and applications to each Old Testament book studied. The student will be able to discern the overall theme of each book via the survey method delineated in the textbook.
